When you live in a city there are often famous things about the city that you never get around to doing. The thought behind this is that you live there, no hurry. Then, before you know it, you move away and never get around to doing them.
This was the case for me and several iconic New York Eats. But no longer.
The sandwich above is from Katz's Deli (of "When Harry Met Sally"). It is the pastrami sandwich that all pastrami sandwiches strive to be. The meat is indescribable, you have to experience it to know what I'm talking about. And their corned beef Reuben's deserve a mention all their own as well as the pickles. But its the Pastrami that is the star.

And then there is the little matter of Grand Central Oyster Bar. I traveled through Grand Central Station every day on my way to work when I lived in New York. I'd pass by this restaurant under the beautiful tiled cavern arches and swear I'd make plans to go one of these days. One of these days finally happened last week. They have a serious range of oysters for you to choose from. On the evening we were there the oyster bar menu must have had twenty different types on offer. We opted to start with an oyster platter that held - Oystervilles, Blue Points, Malpeques, and a type from Massachusetts. A meal in one of the most beautiful train stations in the world is a definite treat.

However, if you are craving a lobster roll, then can I suggest that instead of having one at Grand Central you go here instead?
This is the Pearl Oyster Bar Lobster Roll. Big chunks of meaty lobster in a sweet roll that perfectly balances the sweet lobster taste with crispy shoestring fries. Pearl also has delicious oysters but their selection is much more limited than Grand Central. Just one or two types but those will be stunning.

Now, I just need to get myself to the top of the Empire State Building and I'll be able to cross that off my list too...
